My 1960 Chrysler New Yorker Town & Country was sold new at Max Barish Inc., located at 4th and La Brea in Los Angeles, California. Max Barish took over the Lysle Greenman Chrysler-Plymouth dealership in January of 1950. The dealership was located at 420 South La Brea Avenue in Los Angeles. Previously, Mr. Barish sold Reo cars and trucks in Omaha, Nebraska. In 1935, he became associated with the Dodge-Plymouth dealer there and eventually took it over. By 1938 he owned the dealership but Chrysler revoked his franchise when he refused to use their credit agency exclusively. He sued Chrysler for over one million dollars but lost after taking the suit all the way to the Nebraska Supreme Court. After that it appears that he and his family moved to the Los Angeles area. His son Howard 'Bud' Barish joined him in running the dealership after graduating from USC.

In 1952, a new dealership was opened at 444 South La Brea Avenue in time for the introduction of the 1953 models from Chrysler and Plymouth. This would have been the same building that my Town & Country was ordered and delivered from in 1960. In 1953, Max Barish hired a young new comedian to promote the dealership. That person was Johnny Carson of KNXT Television. They may have had a previous connection as Johnny Carson worked at WOW in Omaha a few years earlier.

In April of 1958, Max Barish opened a second location in the valley at 5109 Van Nuys Blvd, Sherman Oaks, previously the Don Lee Trailer Co. lot. Once again Barish got into hot water with Chrysler as they were not an authorized dealer there, Mashak DeSoto-Plymouth was right down the street at 5319 Van Nuys Blvd. This location became a used car sales location even though they still advertised it as being a new car dealership. It appears that they were gone by 1960 there.

Max Barish passed away at age 80 on September 22, 1967 in Los Angeles. His son Howard continued the dealership up through about 1992. Howard 'Bud' Barish died at age 76 on November 17, 1998. He was known as the Auto Dealer to the stars selling cars to such entertainers as Bob Hope, Cary Grant, Fred Astaire and Michael Landon. Click here for more history on Mr. Barish.

I'm looking for some Max Barish, Inc. license plate frames in good shape to put on my wagon.

In 1957, Max Barish had a small showroom at 650 So. La Brea Ave., in Los Angeles. Right down the street from the main dealership. This was called the Max Barish Exclusive Imperial Salon. It appears to only accomodate a few cars at a time and according to a newspaper advertisement in May of 1957, the Salon was open on weekends and evenings. The building is no longer there.

I would like to find more information about this, such as when it opened and how long it was there.
